Headlands' Artist in ResidenceChamberlain Award, and Chiaro Award are fully sponsored residencies for local, national, and international artists working across disciplines at various stages in their careers. Our residencies bring together practitioners from diverse locales and cultural backgrounds for meaningful engagement, inquiry, and discourse.

For local, national, and international artists working in a wide range of disciplines

The Artist in Residence (AIR) program awards fully sponsored residencies to approximately 45 local, national, and international artists each year. Artists selected for this program work at the cutting-edge of their field, are at a critical stage in their career, and express a desire to work within Headlands' unique physical environment and peer-to-peer community. Artists in Residence work in all media, including drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, film, video, new media, installation, fiction and nonfiction writing, poetry, dance, music, interdisciplinary, social practice, and architecture. Residencies of four to ten weeks include flexible studio space, chef-prepared meals, comfortable housing, and travel and living stipends. Learn more

For artists working in social practice worldwide

Fully sponsored residency and $5,000 cash prize

Honoring visionary artist and former Headlands Program Director Ann Chamberlain, the Chamberlain Award is a fully sponsored artist residency and cash prize designed to support an artist who displays exceptional merit working in the discipline of social practice. This award supports artists whose creative work, through a range of non-traditional or non-studio based media, encourages socially engaged interaction, participation, and investigation that directly inspires change for individual lives and communities. Learn more

Fully sponsored residency and $15,000 cash prize

The Chiaro Award is a fully sponsored artist residency and cash prize for an accomplished mid-career painter residing in the United States. As definitions of the medium have expanded, the Chiaro Award aims to support an individual whose investigations are yielding innovative approaches and solutions to painting's possibilities. The award is designed to have a meaningful impact on the life and career of one artist per year, by both recognizing past success, and by fostering their ability to continue to produce exceptional and exemplary work in the medium of painting. Learn more

Our Artists Programs provide opportunities for research, experimentation, professional development, and peer-to-peer exchange for artists of all disciplines at critical times in their careers. Unique among programs for artists, Headlands’ dynamic programs provide meaningful resources—time, space, community, and financial support—and are home to local, national, and international Artists in Residence, regional Affiliate Artists and Graduate Fellows, and visiting artists and curators working on new projects.
