This painting started out as that I thought I would develop a lot more. I had started the painting using a complimentary color scheme of cadmium orange and purple.  First I sketched in the composition in purple and washed in some tones.

I then mixed some oranges and began applying them with only a bit of cross over between the colors it created a wonderful abstract light and shadow that was related somewhat to a painting by Richard Diebenkorn called “Morning Coffee.”

The paint on this one is somewhat thinner than in my usual work.  I was so taken by the color and the mixing and contrast of the blues and oranges, and the drawing of the head was so solid that I thought I had better not work on it anymore in case I destroy or over mix the color and change the big abstract shapes that define the planes of the face.
