Most of the people I love and are my family are either gay or considered "minorities" by main stream US culture.  This has made me consider who I choose to portray in my art.

My main mission for making art is to represent people who are beautiful but don't fit the main stream ideals of who is found beautiful.  For this reason I focus on gay and gender fluid people as well as black and brown people.  I hope that by doing this I am able to support people who are outside of the "mainstream" and show the world how beautiful and attractive every human being is.

This watercolor of a hairy gay bear is cropped because an important component of the work I make is an attempt to create an interesting composition by cropping the figure and working with the edges of the picture plane to create an asymmetrical and interesting composition.  I think it also creates a bit of mystery especially as to the identity of the model.

This work is painted by first sketching out the figure with a lithographic crayon and then applying successive layers of watercolor over the crayon to create shading and color.

The paper that this is painted on is called Rives BFK, which is a type of heavy cotton printmaking paper that won't degrade over time and should hold the color really well for at least fifty to one hundred years without fading, especially if this is framed behind glass.
