Bandit, oil on canvas panel 11x14 inches by Kenney Mencher

This is a small "ala prima" painting, which means it was painted all in one session. I started paintings like this with a quick sketch in oil in the color burnt umber or burnt sienna. Then I move on to lay out successively thicker layers of paint until the brushwork starts to emerge and sculpt the face.

In terms of the composition, I pushed the boundaries of the painting by allowing the top of the head, ear, and beard to touch or overlap the corners to make the composition more interesting and a little bit more asymmetrical.
