In this edition, sound artists including Guillermo Galindo, Molly Joyce (AIR), Andy Puls, Voicehandler (AIR), and others tune our ears to a whole new experience of the outdoors. Hikers will meet in the Eastwing to briefly study-up on the science of sound before heading outside to find, observe, and participate in a variety of experiences orchestrated by artists, authors, and scientists. You’ll encounter analog and electronic sound-generating instruments powered by weather, solar energy, and even our own bodies, voices, and thoughts. After foraying, (r)amblers reconvene in the Mess Hall to enjoy a post-trek meal. Libations and hot drinks generously provided by Alysian Wines, Equator Coffees & Teas, and Fort Point Beer Company. Learn more Friday, November 17 | 7–9:15PM Free and open to the public Sunday–Thursday, 12–5PM Project Space presents site-specific exhibitions that are guided by information and experiences gathered while at Headlands. Home to select Artists in Residence each season, as well as occasional group exhibitions, Project Space is a place of exchange among artists and visitors, a place where ideas are germinated, conversations are shared, and new work is made. Visitors are invited to witness and engage with Project Space throughout the various stages of making: as working studios undergoing transformation, and in their final state as complete exhibitions. Learn more No Human Eyes: Will Rogan Multidisciplinary Bay Area artist Will Rogan has recently been using documentary photography as a guiding element in producing sculptures. During his seasonal job as an expedition guide aboard a cruise ship in Antarctica, Rogan produced many images of a human-free landscape. Combining these images with handmade ceramic pieces and other items evocative of human innovation, Rogan’s Project Space installation presents a confrontation between the austere and rugged environments of wild nature and human ideals of objects, community, and function. Learn more View exhibition in progress: Sunday–Thursday, 12–5PM Exhibition opening: Sunday, November 5, 4–6PM On view through November 17 Open 24 Hours: Edra Soto Chicago-based artist Edra Soto has devoted much of her multifaceted artistic practice to investigating the ways that class and race figure in post-colonial representations. Since 2016, Soto has been photographically documenting her Chicago neighborhood, focusing especially on areas that are accessible at all hours (such as her boulevard and adjacent streets). These places are highly visible, yet are rarely—if ever—cleaned by the city, and constantly accumulate detritus. While documenting the debris and trash, Soto found traces of a drug and alcohol fueled economy, drawing connections to the city’s recent and deep past. At Headlands, Soto will relocate Open 24 Hours into Headlands’ Project Space, producing an exhibition that includes architectural interventions, continued photo documentation, and a workshop for exhibition visitors to produce objects to be placed in the space. Learn more View exhibition in progress: Sunday–Thursday, 12–5PM Exhibition opening: Sunday, November 5, 4–6PM On view through November 17 SFAI—Fort Mason Campus Opening Spectacle Free Congratulations to San Francisco Art Institute on the opening of its Fort Mason Campus.
