How to Decide on Prices for your Art (Several points of View)

Q: If you don't mind me asking, approximately what percentage of the price drop is simply from selling your work on your own versus using a traditional gallery?

I wonder if the typical art collectors know how much (or little) the artist brings home after the gallery takes its cut.

A: So galleries take 50% of the sale price. The artist also has to pay for shipping to the gallery, some promotion, travel, shipping back unsold works and also supplies.

So here's a breakdown for a show.

10-20 paintings in a show.
Canvases, and paints                                   -$2,000.
Shipping                                                           -$600.
Catalog                                                          -$1000
_____________________________________________
Expenses paid by artist up front                     -$3,600.

So let's say I sell three paintings,                     +$3600,
                                                                          +$2000,
                                                                           +$1,000

Total Sales                                                          +6,600
Galley Commission 50%                                    -3,300
Paid to me (I get)                                                +$3,300
Expenses paid by artist up front                         -$3,600.

Profit (Actually Loss)                                             -300

I lost $300 on the show. (Actually more I rented a photobooth.)
So I essentially sold 6,600 but lost a couple of hundred dollars.

My Commission Price List

Thank you so much for your interest in a portrait.

Portraits are really scary for me and so I tend to charge more for them.  The cost depends on whether you want an acrylic or oil painting or a drawing.

(I prefer to do drawings and acrylic for commissions because the likenesses tend to be more accurate.)

Look below at the price list and email me back with pictures and the size and the paint you want me to work with.

Commissions take 4 weeks with an additional week for delivery.  The cost of shipping is included in these prices.

You pay after it is finished on Etsy.

If you do not like the portrait you do have the right to reject it.  You will owe me no money.

No questions asked but I do reserve the right to sell unpurchased commissions. I will just not use your name or identify it as a portrait of you when I sell it.
