Fryer, whose testimony on May 2, 1972 at the American Psychiatric Association (APA) Annual Meeting was pivotal to the decision to remove homosexuality as a mental disorder from the APA's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, where it had been listed for more than 20 years.

HEROES was started in 2003 to honor individuals whose work and leadership advance the rights of the LGBT community.  The Delaware Valley Legacy Fund honors these heroes annually in celebration of their character & in encouragement of others to act heroically.
