The Fall Gala is Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art’s annual celebration honoring the LGBTQ+ communities' most illustrious artists and advocates – our leaders of today, who are forefronting art and social justice for the advancement of queer culture.  On November 9th, join us in celebrating visionary artist Jeffrey Gibson and vanguard politician Annise Parker. Jeffrey Gibson’s multimedia practice synthesizes the cultural and artistic traditions of his Cherokee and Choctaw heritage with themes from contemporary popular and queer culture. Gibson’s work is a vibrant call for queer and Indigenous empowerment, envisioning a celebration of strength and joy within these communities. Annise Parker is the former three-term Mayor of Houston, the first ever openly gay mayor to be elected in the United States. Parker is currently the CEO of The Victory Fund, the only national organization dedicated to electing openly LGBTQ+ people who can further equality at all levels of government.  This will be an evening to remember, with performances and visuals curated by our artist honoree Jeffrey Gibson along with dinner, dancing, and a chance to bid on some of the most exciting contemporary queer art. MX OOPS MX is a multimedia performer and artist, and the artistic director of Complex Stability, a New York City based transmedia production company committed to inciting ecstatic disobedience.  Narcissister Narcissister is a Brooklyn-based artist and performer. Wearing a mask and merkin, she works at the intersection of contemporary dance, visual art, and activism. Following the premiere on CNN of a new documentary about gun violence in America, researchers from the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Prevention and Policy and experts from the Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence will host a one-hour panel discussion and Q&A on Wednesday Sept. 22 at 7pm ET focused on evidence-based policies that reduce gun violence.

“The Price of Freedom” explores the gun debate in America and exposes the political and cultural influence of the National Rifle Association. The film will first air on CNN Sunday, September 19 at 9PM ET. Viewers can also access the film on demand starting Monday, September 20 until Wednesday, September 22.  

 

Wednesday’s panel discussion will be moderated by J. Brian Charles, a reporter for The Trace. Panelists include:

• Daniel Webster, ScD, MPH, Director of the Center for Gun Violence Prevention and Policy 
• Cassandra Crifasi, PhD, MPH, Deputy Director of the Center for Gun Violence Prevention and Policy
• Janel Cubbage, LCPC, Director of Strategic Partnerships and Equity for the Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence
• Josh Horwitz, JD, Executive Director of the Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence

Panelists will discuss various gun violence prevention policies and issues including handgun purchaser licensing, Extreme Risk Protection Order laws, insurrection, and industry regulations -- all through the dual lenses of public health and equity.
