This watercolor is based on a photograph taken by my friend Vincent Keith who publishes Mascular Magazine Fine Art of Man https://www.mascularmagazine.com/
The magazine specializes in portraying the kind of men I like to draw and paint. According to the Urban Dictionary, "A form of size that involves not only being overly masculine but showing an increased muscle size with an overlying layer of pudgy adipose tissue."
I thought this man had a beautiful and kind face and I was also interested playing with composition, line quality and color. I started this drawing with a quick contour line sketch with a crayon on heavy cotton paper and then built up the color and value with additional layers of watercolor.

A studio visit video about a new painting. Snowbound, 12x16 inches oil on canvas panel by Kenney Mencher
This is a small ala prima (painted all in one sitting of about six hours) painting on canvas panel of a salt and pepper handsome "silver fox." The paint is very thick on this and has a variety of textures. The beard is thick short dashy kind of strokes with short hair like marks etched into the paint with a pencil and the butt end of the brush. The background is literally troweled on thick paint in layers over thin washy underpainting.

1976, 18x24 inches oil on canvas panel by Kenney Mencher
In 1976 (the year of the US Bicentennial) I was 11 years old. Elton John's "Philadelphia Freedom" was on the radio and I found a copy of "Playgirl" under my older brother's mattress and I spent hours looking at it. This guy could have been one of the models.
